Communicative Language Testing Scoring System

The concept of Communicative Language Testing is very closely related to the theoretical framework for communicative competence that includes three main competencies grammatical competence, sociolinguistic competence, and strategic competence. Grammatical competence includes knowledge of lexical items and of rules of morphology, syntax, sentence-grammar semantics, and phonology. Sociolinguistics competence includes two sets of rules: socio-cultural rules of use and rules of discourse. Strategic competence consists of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies that may be used to compensate for breakdowns in communication because of performance variables or insufficient competence.

Classroom action research is used as one way to improve the quality of teaching and learning. This is due to the fact that CAR is developed primary because of the problems faced by the teacher in the classroom during teaching and learning activities. It is very critical that more teachers understand the importance of CAR and use this type of research as a tool to improve their teaching ability. CAR has a tendency to give direct impact on the better teaching process and the development of teachers‟ professionalism in managing the class. In other words, through CAR, teacher and educator gain “theory” which he builds himself, not by others “or given” by other people – therefore the teacher becomes a implementer of a theory he builds himself..

Language is a medium of verbal communication amongst human communities throughout the world. Through the medium of human language, people communicate, and share a wide range of meanings, ideas, emotions, feelings and a variety of life’s problems. It is hard to imagine how people could express ideas, meanings, feelings, and emotions, which are very complex and diverse, without a language. Our lives as social beings will seem less significant when the mastery of the language is very limited. Therefore, there is no question and no doubt that language plays a very vital role to the existence and meaning of a human life. In addition to verbal language, humans also interact through nonverbal language or gesture that is also a universal medium of communication. Communicating through sign language or silent language is much more difficult than communicating through verbal language because the meaning of sign language features are closely linked and bound by social and cultural values of native speakers. As a result, the communication through sign language is often misunderstood or misinterpreted, especially in cross-cultural communication. Due to the very diverse and complex problems of human life, high mastery of verbal language seems the most important requirement.

Pada hakekatnya komunikasi verbal dan nonverbal merupakan satu kesatuan yang utuh dan integral mengingat dalam penggunaannnya yang komplementer. Bahasa merupakan hasil dari kebudayaan. Istilah budaya biasanya digunakan untuk menyatakan seluruh cara hidup yang dilakukan oleh masyarakat. Tylor dalam Keesing (1992:68) menyatakan bahwa kebudayaan merupakan suatu hal yang kompleks yang diperoleh dari masyarakat dan selanjutnya akan diteruskan oleh generasi berikutnya.

Validity and Validation Introduction 

This essay is an attempt to explain the concept of validity and validation, since it is related to the most important issues in language testing. Section 1 will define the validity focusing its importance and its relationship with reliability as another face of language measurement current. Validity, for many scholars (e.g. Shonamy 1994), is a complex issue. Therefore, I follow the opinion saying that the more we separate validity's types, the more we can measure the language tests. In the light of this state, section 2 going to consider the types and examples of validation in two main kind; an internal and an external types, paying n special attention on the construct validity as an umbrella to all other forms. It is important, also, to outline the data one might wish to collect and analyse as supporting evidence for claiming test validity. Finally, as usual, the conclusion will summarise the essay.

100 Things You Can Do To Improve Your English


1. Don‟t be afraid to make mistakes. Be confident. People can only correct your mistakes when they hear you make them.
2. Surround yourself in English. Put yourself in an all English speaking environment where you can learn passively. The best way to learn is through speaking.
3. Practice every day. Make yourself a study plan. Decide how much time a week you are going to spend studying and stick to it. Establish a routine.
4. Tell your family and friends about your study plan. Get them to push you to study and also don‟t let them interrupt you.
5. Practice the 4 core skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. They all need to be worked on for you to improve.
6. Keep a notebook of new words you learn. Use them in sentences and try to say them at least 3 times when you speak.
7. Do a lesson at least once a day.
8. Memorization of lists is one of the most common ways of learning vocabulary for a test. It‟s only a good exercise for short term studying because you often do not retain the information that you have learned for a test.
9. Use your body clock. If you‟re not a morning person, study in the afternoon.
10. You will find words easier to remember if you try to remember an example sentence using that word rather the word on its own.

Requirement:
  1. All students are required to attend all meetings of the lecturing session or minimum 80 % of the whole meetings
  2. The students who are atttending the lecturing sessions less than 80 % of the whole meetings are not elligible to take the final semester test. Some consequences may be subjected to those who failed to meet the agreed requirement
  3. The students are required to complete all suggested assigments of this lecture and extra assigment will be given to those who failed to meet the deadline of assigment submission.
  4. The students are required to meet all the rules and regulation of being a student of  FKIP Mahasaraswati Denpasar to be elligible to attend this lecture.
  5. Evaluation: Evaluation will be based on a set of comprehensive measures of students’ engagement in classroom activities, contribution in group discussion, invidual and group assigment, mid and final test. The scoring system will be based on the following:
a)   The score of invidual and group assigment (Nilai Tugas) and classroom activity participation
b)   Mid Semester Test (Nilai UTS)
c)    Final Semester Test (Nilai UAS)
Formula of scoring :  N = 2 TGS + 3UTS +5UAS
